Quick start
1. Create the Library
Section titled “1. Create the Library”mkdir -p "$HOME/skills-library"export SKILLS_HOME="$HOME/skills-library"skills initinit creates .skills-meta/config.toml in the selected directory. The root directory must already exist, and init leaves an existing configuration unchanged. The export lasts for the current shell. To keep the setting, add it to your shell configuration or store the path in ~/.config/skills-tui/root.
Root lookup order is --root DIR, SKILLS_HOME, then the pointer file. Configuration covers global and project paths.
2. Add a skill
Section titled “2. Add a skill”Create hello-skill directly in the Library:
mkdir -p "$SKILLS_HOME/hello-skill"cat > "$SKILLS_HOME/hello-skill/SKILL.md" <<'EOF'---name: hello-skilldescription: Explain the current project in a short summary.---Read the project documentation and summarize its purpose and entry points.EOFConfirm that the Library recognizes it:
skills listskills show hello-skillskills list includes a row like this:
hello-skill local Explain the current project in a short summary.skills show hello-skill prints the skill’s metadata and content. Local skills need no separate metadata record. A declared name must be 1 to 64 characters long and may contain lowercase ASCII letters, digits, and single hyphens. Hyphens cannot appear at either end or repeat consecutively.
3. Deploy it
Section titled “3. Deploy it”Inspect the configured targets:
skills agents listPreview the link, then apply it:
skills deploy hello-skill --agent claude --dry-runskills deploy hello-skill --agent claudeskills agents status claudeThe preview reports the destination without changing any files. Deployment creates a hello-skill symlink in Claude’s configured skills directory. It does not launch Claude or run the skill. An Agent entry only defines a target directory; it does not confirm that the Agent is installed.
Remove the managed link without deleting the Library copy:
skills undeploy hello-skill --agent claude4. Open the TUI
Section titled “4. Open the TUI”skillsThe TUI opens on Library. Tab moves between Library, Tags, Presets, Agents, Repos, and Health. When focus is outside a text input, : opens the command palette, a opens actions for the selected item, and ? opens help. Esc moves back one level. From the tab strip, it exits the TUI.
Root Git backup remains off until configured. To import remote content, inspect it first with skills install owner/repo --list; Library and sources covers the full flow.
